It’s been seven months since I decided to start writing more and wow, it’s been such an interesting journey so far as I figure out
what inspires me,
what motivates me to keep writing, and,
(most of all) what all of you like to read.
The last few months though, it’s been a little harder to stay motivated and inspired. Why am I doing this? Where am I trying to go?
So I texted a writer friend and she told me about this book called The Artist’s Way that she swears by and to give it a try.
So I cracked it open over the weekend and the first thing I love about it is that she thinks everyone is an artist. Sadly it’s taking a little time for me to associate myself with that word — but I’m working on it!
The book guides you through 12 weeks of creative exercises, so I thought it could be fun to share how they go.
Week 1 is all about conquering your inner critic. Ha! Who doesn’t need that. Apart from the weekly exercises, the book recommends two fundamental exercises that you should do, well, for the rest of your life.
- Morning pages: Three full pages of stream-of-consciousness longhand all in one go in the morning
- Artist date: A weekly date you take (only!) your creative self on and do something fun! explore! wander! observe! dance! play! can you tell I’m really excited about this one?
The idea is that your morning pages unblock you and your artist dates inspire you. And they build on each other to get you into a consistent creative flow.
If you have suggestions for my first artist date, let me know! Some suggestions in the book include:
- Going to the corner store and buying random things for $10, like stickers, and seeing what you can do with them
- Watching the clouds pass by
- Planting something
- Writing some snail mail to an old friend
- It can be anything!
